The Kansas City Chiefs blew an 18-point lead against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game, and much of the blame has been put on Patrick Mahomes after his late-game struggles. However, head coach Andy Reid is taking responsibility.
Kansas City scored just three points in the second half of the contest after exploding for 21 points in the first two quarters. The Bengals were able to cut the lead before halftime at 21-10, but the writing seemed to be on the wall considering how good Mahomes was playing.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs QB looked like a different person in the second half as the Chiefs struggled to get anything going offensively against the Bengals' defense. Cincinnati then took advantage of the opportunity and staged a wild comeback rarely seen in the Conference Championship.
In his postgame media availability, however, Reid claimed he could have done a better job in giving Mahomes better plays.
“I could have given him other things to work with,” the Chiefs coach said, per Jori Epstein of USA Today. “Better things. I could have given him better plays to work with.”

The Chiefs were widely considered the favorites to win the contest and advance to the Super Bowl, so it's no wonder why a lot of people are shocked and frustrated by the rather wild outcome.
However, true enough, the Chiefs have no one to blame but themselves for collapsing after building a massive lead. Patrick Mahomes' performance aside, the Bengals also had their way against the Kansas City defense and received little resistance.
Andy Reid and co. now head to the offseason with plenty of questions about their offense and defense. With what they have shown, one thing is clear: they need to retool one way or another.
