Following a disappointing close to another strong season, the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid have already made some major changes to their staff this offseason.

Their offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, left to become the next head coach of Chicago Bears. In wake of Nagy's absence, Reid stated that he will be calling the offensive plays next season, according to Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star News.

“I’m gonna go back to doing that — I’ll do that,” Reid said, when asked at the Senior Bowl who will call the plays this season. “I did it at Denver, against Denver. And I was very happy with Matt (Nagy), but we’ve had some change, and whatever I think is best for the team, I’ll go from there.”

Reid has a lot of experience as an offensive coordinator in his coaching career, dating back to him pulling double duty when he was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. He will have plenty to work with in terms of offensive talent. Weapons like tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and running back Kareem Hunt put the team in the position to vie for a third straight AFC West division title.

The only huge question that remains is the future of Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith, who has been mentioned in various rumors as being available on the trade market.  Smith is set to enter the final year of his deal that may reach $20.6 million due to a $2 million roster bonus that will be triggered if he’s on the roster at the start of training camp. If the Chiefs choose to release him before then, his contract will only be a $3.6 million hit against the salary cap.

It should be noted that rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes II started the final game of the regular season, where he completed 22-of-35 passes for 284 yards. Unlike many other teams considering moving on from their current starting QBs, the Chiefs already have a successor in place.
