Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been nothing short of spectacular thus far in the 2018 NFL season. Even head coach Andy Reid cannot help but compare his likeness to Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Mahomes' play this season has given Reid flashbacks of his days with the Green Bay Packers. According to Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star, he even compared his star quarterback to a young Favre:
“I saw Brett when he was young and running around and doing like these kind of things,” Reid said. “Then I turn on this tape and I see this kid from Texas Tech running around and doing these things, and you can’t coach that. I mean, that’s just the love of the game and both you and Patrick play like you’re playing in the backyard. Like you just go ‘OK, we’re going to line up and the coach is going to give me this but you know what, if that’s not there we’re just going to kind of make it happen.’ And so those similarities are so unique.
Reid's comparison may seem a bit premature. However, his opinion on the matter certainly carries plenty of weight considering his firsthand experience with both players. Furthermore, it is easy to see why there is plenty of truth to his statements.
Much like Favre, Mahomes possess a rocket arm and uncanny awareness in the pocket. Not only does this make them quite the entertaining player to watch, but it also gives opposing defenses fits when it comes to stopping them. Fortunately for Reid, there is one glaring difference between both of these players thus far, and that is Mahomes' ability to protect the ball. Favre was known for throwing more interceptions than any quarterback in NFL history; however, the second-year quarterback still has yet to throw his first in 2o18.
While this type of efficiency will be impossible to maintain, Mahomes has shown that he has all the tools that make a great quarterback. This could be why Reid was so confident in making the transition under center from quarterback Alex Smith this offseason.
