Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is not just good because of his incredible arm talent; he is also very smart on the field.
As a matter of fact, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians thinks Mahomes' football IQ is on par with a couple of terrific quarterbacks Arians coached at different times during his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, according to Sam Farmer of The Los Angeles Times.
Yes, those signal-callers are Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, who were widely considered two of the most intelligent quarterbacks in the game when they played.
Arians also said Mahomes is one of the four smartest players he has ever seen on the football field, but would not reveal the fourth, because “that way, every other guy I have coached will think that I’m talking about him.”
Mahomes, who played his collegiate football at Texas Tech, was originally selected by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He spent his rookie campaign learning behind veteran Alex Smith, but that ensuing offseason, Kansas City traded Smith to the Washington Redskins, clearing the way for Mahomes to start.
Mahomes responded by winning the NFL's MVP award during his first season under center, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns.
The 24-year-old wasn't quite as dominant this year, finishing with 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns, but it should be noted that Mahomes missed a couple of games due to a dislocated knee-cap. Plus, he was still good enough to make the Pro Bowl.
Most importantly, Mahomes has the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, as he and his squad will face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
