Around this time of year, undrafted rookies have their time to shine. Teams are holding their rookie minicamps, at this is the time for these guys to make an impression before all the veterans get involved at training camp and OTAs.
The Kansas City Chiefs are holding their minicamp right now, and one player in particular is standing out. Undrafted Toledo receiver Cody Thompson has been standing out, per B.J. Kissel of the team's official site.
“He’s catching everything thrown in his vicinity and always seems to find himself open down the field. His best catch of the day came in the variety of a diving one—showing an ability to adjust to an errant throw—something he’s done consistently over the past two days,” Kissel writes.
This came from the team's official in-house reporter, so it's definitely worth noting. As Kissel points out, Thompson was the program's all-time leader in touchdown receptions by the time he got done at Toledo.
Many observers, like NFL.com's Lance Zierlein, thought he would get drafted, so it's not shocking he's making a splash.
Thanks to the Tyreek Hill situation, the Chiefs' receiving pecking order is a bit unsettled. If Hill is ultimately cut the team will be scrambling to replace him, and it could present the perfect opportunity for a player like Thompson to make the roster.
Zierlein writes that he's a “natural-born pass catcher with soft hands, quality routes and advanced feel for body positioning and control.”
Thompson also played on special teams at Toledo, which should help him in his quest to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster.
