It is hard to argue against the fact that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton are two of the best in the business. With both longtime NFL head coaches knowing a thing or two about quarterbacks, Payton recently gave Reid some serious praise in regards to KC's pick of franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“I felt like it was the best quarterback I had ever seen on tape in a workout,” Sean Payton recently said of the Chiefs QB, via Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. “I had done a lot of them to that point. You name it. I just thought he had that rare ability, and there was going to be a ton of upside. Man, he was real good in the meeting room. He processed the information extremely [well] — all those things you can’t see on video. That was just my instincts. I didn’t know for sure. But when the draft comes, you begin to think, ‘Well, there’s gotta be someone else that sees what I see.'”
While most were concerned with Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson back in 2017, it was actually Patrick Mahomes that quickly became the diamond in the rough.
With Andy Reid and the Chiefs trading up in the first round to select Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech, the veteran signal-caller has already won a NFL MVP award, a Super Bowl MVP honor and a Super Bowl title.
“Look, I’ve always respected Andy. It was one of those where I don’t know how many people had the grade on Patrick that we had,” Payton added. “But I thought Andy clearly would have with his background at the quarterback position. He would’ve seen, I think, the same things.”
As it stands today, the Chiefs would be the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC, with Payton's Saints only recently slipping to No. 2 in the NFC behind the top-seeded Green Bay Packers.
