Kyler Murray's new contract extension is the talk of the NFL right now. Patrick Mahomes certainly remembers the feeling, as he was given a lucrative new extension from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. His $503 million extension broke the internet when it was announced.
Mahomes was asked for his thoughts on new QB deals after Murray, Deshaun Watson and Aaron Rodgers all got new deals this offseason. According to Adam Teicher of ESPN, Mahomes also knows not to sweat it when it comes to new quarterback deals surpassing him. He understands that contract values are going up and sees that winning is the most important thing.
“When I signed my deal, I knew I was going to be set for life regardless of how the market [went],” Patrick Mahomes said, via ESPN. “You just keep playing. Money is one thing but when you get those Super Bowl rings at the end of your career, I think that's going to be the thing that you look back on. I think I've made enough money on the football field and off of it as well that it won't matter at the end of the day. Especially at the quarterback position, the next guy is the highest-paid guy. Any of these top-tier quarterbacks, they make such a difference on NFL football teams that [older contracts are] going to get passed up.”
Mahomes is certainly set up for life, as his massive contract runs for nearly a decade still and will make him one of the highest players in all of sports. His ability to compete for championships will depend on whether the Chiefs have enough firepower to overcome the loss of Tyreek Hill.
Patrick Mahomes is well on his way to having one of the best careers in all of football. Winning more Super Bowls with the Chiefs is at the forefront of his mind now that he doesn't have to worry about contract talks.
