The Kansas City Chiefs are an offensive force and that impact has carried them over the hump and into the Super Bowl. This could be two in a row if Dee Ford had not lined up offsides. The point is, there could be more to come if Patrick Mahomes remains healthy and under center as a Chief.
Mahomes is in line to become the NFL's first $200 million man in the league's history. With the way he is playing, that could be sooner than later. Mahomes has incredible weapons including the league's best tight end in Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, who is the fastest player in the NFL. Andy Reid is a great offensive mind and knows how to put it all together.
The Chiefs will upgrade the running back position either in free agency or the draft. There is one name that has been left out. That is Sammy Watkins.
Sammy Watkins
Watkins played 13 games for the Chiefs in 2019. He began the season with nine catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. From there on out, he was mediocre. Watkins recorded 52 catches for 673 yards and those three touchdowns in Week 1 for the season.

Watkins originally signed a three-year, $48 million contract with the Chiefs with $30 million guaranteed. Kansas City has a potential out at the end of this season that would save them money. Watkins carried a $21 million cap hit in 2020. Cutting the Clemson product would carry just $7 million in dead cap. This is money that the Chiefs could put towards Mahomes' extension or towards bringing back Chris Jones.
When looking at the Chiefs roster, he is not needed. Watkins was the third-best wide receiver on his team this season and the fourth-best pass-catcher overall. Players like Mahomes and Kelce are the main priorities for the Chiefs to keep in Kansas City for a long time.
Watkins is not one of those priorities plus letting him go makes sense financially. At 26 years old, Watkins could land on his fourth team in 2020. If healthy, he could be productive for a team in need of a receiver but that team is not the Chiefs.
