The Kansas City Chiefs acquired star defensive lineman Frank Clark in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, sending a 2019 first-round draft pick and a 2020 second-rounder to the Seahawks in exchange for his services.
Fox Sports talk-show host Colin Cowherd thinks the Clark trade is a good move for both sides:
“It's a win-now move by the Chiefs, it's a position of need and he's a heck of a football player,” Cowherd said on The Herd. “This is a really good move by Seattle … Once they signed Russell Wilson to that massive contract, they needed draft picks.”
Clark is coming off of a terrific 2018 campaign in which he racked up 41 tackles, 13 sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles and a couple of fumble recoveries.
He was slated to hit free agency this offseason, but the Seahawks placed a franchise tag on him. Not wanting to play out the 2019 season on a one-year deal, Clark asked Seattle for a contract extension and threatened to hold out if no agreement was reached.
It was also rumored that the 25-year-old would have had no intention of re-signing with the Seahawks if he hit free agency a year from now.
But, with Seattle inking Wilson to a historic extension, there was not much money left in the till for Clark, so the Seahawks ended up trading him.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, paid the pass rusher immediately, signing him to a five-year, $105 million deal right after acquiring him.
Clark spent the first four years of his career in Seattle.
