There continues to be a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in the NFL and the league is tasked with figuring out how to combat it. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, due to the increase in cases, the NFL could look to alter how teams are able to make the playoffs.
“The NFL has gone over a number of alternative scenarios, and in a season of COVID, it very well may be forced to resort to one of those. And one of those that has come up is that the playoffs won't be based on a number of wins as it has been every year that the NFL has existed, it could just simply be that it's based on win percentage. That if the Tennessee Titans go 10-3 this year, or whatever their record is, if their win percentage is better, they go to the playoffs.
Of course, throughout the history of the NFL, the teams with the most wins will clinch a playoff berth. Also, since the inception of divisions, the winner of each division clinches a postseason spot.
But if the Tennessee Titans are discovered to have violated the league's COVID-19 protocols, then they could be forced to forfeit games. The Titans, who are currently 3-0 and are one of the remaining undefeated teams, have had 23 players and personnel test positive in the past two weeks.
Besides the Titans, the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Las Vegas Raiders have all had positive tests. Instead of conducting the playoffs in a normal manner, which has already been extended to seven teams in each conference, the NFL may be inclined to make even more changes to this year's postseason format.
