Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook was hoping to secure a long-term deal before the 2020 NFL season. Unfortunately, it appears that lack of headway has spurred both sides to put a hold on their negotiations, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero:

Contract talks broke off Tuesday between the #Vikings and star RB Dalvin Cook, sources say.

Talks could restart later, of course. But for now, Cook has said he's focused on Week 1 as he enters last year of his rookie deal, with franchise tag looming in 2021.

Although Cook is optimistic about sticking around for the long haul with the Vikings, he was adamant about maintaining his focus on the 2020 campaign and never intended to hold out of training camp due to the ongoing contract negotiations. He is now slated to play out his rookie deal on a $1.3 million salary before hitting free agency in 2021.

Cook made a strong case for a lucrative payday by finishing the 2019 season with a career-high 1,135 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also showed off his versatility in the passing game with a career-high 53 receptions for 519 yards. As a result, he is now looking to get paid as an every-down back.

Unfortunately, it could be difficult for teams to meet Cook's price tag once he hits the market. On top of the taboo that already exists with paying running backs big money, teams are also bracing for the financial repercussions of playing this season amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which will inevitably include a reduced salary cap.

Regardless, Cook will need to put up some big numbers if he hopes to solidify his case as an elite running back.
