The Oakland Raiders recently released punter Marquette King after over half a decade with the team. It didn’t take too long for a team to express interest in his services.

According to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, the Minnesota Vikings have already inquired about the new free agent.

Source said the Vikings have inquired about punter Marquette King, released today by Oakland. Vikings punter Ryan Quigley is under contract in 2018 for a nonguaranteed $790,000.

King spent his first six seasons in the NFL with the Raiders after he was signed as an undrafted free agent back in 2012. He played in 80 games for the team overall, averaging 46.8 yards per punt.

The Raiders just signed King to a five-year, $16.5 million contract extension last offseason. But by cutting him, the Raiders saved $2.9 million against their cap.

The Vikings' interest in King is a bit curious given that they already have a capable punter in Ryan Quigley under contract. Quigley just went the entire 2017 season without a touchback, which is quite an impressive feat. However, their inquiry about King could be a sign that the Vikes aren’t completely satisfied with Quigley and are still interested in making an upgrade at the position if possible.

The Vikings have already spent big bucks upgrading at quarterback this offseason following their signing of Kirk Cousins. As currently constructed, they should have all the pieces needed to make a run at the Super Bowl. But perhaps they want to continue improving along the margins of the team, and they believe that adding a punter like King could do just that to their special teams.
