The New York Jets are in a very messy situation with superstar defensive back Jamal Adams. Currently, the two are in a contract dispute. And Adams has asked to be traded, even going as far as giving a list of teams that he wants to play for.
It does not seem to be getting any better either.
With that in mind, former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum weighed in. As reported by Riley Gates of 247Sports.com, Tannenbaum explained how the Adams situation should be resolved.
“I think first and foremost, we’ve got to take the temperature down. Let’s have hard and difficult communications, but let’s do it internally. It doesn’t help anybody, especially in that market, to let things leak out. It’s Chris Johnson, it’s Joe Douglas, it’s Adam Gase and nobody else on the Jets’ side. It’s Jamal and his agent on his side.
“Let’s get in a room, let’s look eye-to-eye and say, ‘Hey, here’s where we are. We can’t pay you like Jerry Jones did with Zeke Elliott. We don’t think that’s the right thing to do. But you were drafted here, we want you to retire here, you’re a tempo-setter, you mean a lot to us. And at the appropriate time, we want to take care of you. But it’s not going to be this year and we’re not going to trade you.’”
“With the new CBA, he’s going to need to have the accrued season,” Tannenbaum said. “I just don’t see a holdout becoming a part of this variable, which is, unfortunately, what we had in the deal with Darrelle Revis. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. But job number one right now is take the temperature down. That’s not doing anybody any good.””
Tannenbaum goes right after the situation for the Jets. He has a clear plan of attack, and that attack is simple. First, get everything out on the table. This should help calm things down and make it easier for both sides to talk.
However, that's not where it ends for the Jets. While that is certainly an important part, it's not all there is to the situation. It is also important to keep this all internally.
Next is to figure out where to go from there for the Jets.
