New York Jets rookie defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is nearly ready to take the field again. The No. 3 overall pick is expected to practice Wednesday, when the Jets take the field for their fifth day of organized team activities.

Williams sat out most of last week’s three practices, as well as Tuesday’s session, after sustaining a calf injury early in OTAs. But head coach Adam Gase said that the 21-year-old defensive tackle is getting back to normal.

We’ll slowly work him back in,” Gase said.

Williams’ limited work has been mostly precautionary. He tweaked his calf last Tuesday, when the Jets had their first OTA practice, which prompted the Jets to take a slow-and-steady approach to his return.

When he has been on the prized draft pick out of Alabama has garnered rave reviews, including from some of his teammates.

Newly signed linebacker CJ Mosley has been among Williams' fans so far, and has expressed excitement about what the defensive tackle brings to the team.

“We’re excited to have him,” Mosley said at the Jets’ OTAs. “He has a high motor, and from what we’ve seen on film, he’s definitely a player that could disrupt the passing game and the run game.”

The 21-year-old defensive tackle was an all-around player in college. He got into the backfield on a run or a pass — it didn’t matter. Last season, Williams had 71 total tackles (19.5 for loss), eight sacks and a pass defensed.

Williams could be the missing piece on a defensive line that has struggled to make plays in recent years.
