The Philadelphia Eagles are only three seasons removed from winning the Super Bowl. But two players on the roster that had forgettable seasons last year were not on the team on that fateful occasion. Defensive tackle Malik Jackson and wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside both had tough 2019 seasons for different reasons. Arcega-Whiteside was a rookie selected late in the second round (57th overall), so it was unlikely that he was going to impact winning in a big way his first season.
Jackson, on the other hand, has a Super Bowl win (2015 with the Denver Broncos) and a Pro Bowl selection (2017 with the Jacksonville Jaguars) on his resume. But he suffered a Lisfranc injury in Week 1 last year, which forced to miss the remainder of the 2020 season.
Both players are looking to bounce back, as they were quoted in a story on the Eagles' official website by Vaughn Johnson stating:
“I wasn’t good enough,” Arcega-Whiteside explained. “That just happens to some people. Some people get in the NFL, things are moving fast, and it's hard to keep up. Some people ball out their first year. I look back at it and I'm like I'm not even the same guy, so I'm not even going to worry about what happened last year.”
Arcega-Whiteside only had 10 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown in his rookie season.
“I'm not going to say they forgot about me, but I definitely have some ground to make up and make people remember,” Jackson told reporters.
Because of the injury, Jackson was unable to live up to his Pro Bowl pedigree. But let’s hope that an injury-free Jackson will do just that.
