The Washington Redskins started off the offseason with the first major splash move by acquiring Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs. Immediately following the move, the franchise inked Smith to a four-year, extension worth $94 million to keep him in place for likely the remainder of his career.
This had seemingly ended the conversation in terms of putting in place the franchise quarterback for the long haul in Washington. According to Kimberly A. Martin of the Washington Post, Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Doug Williams stated that the Redskins could snag a quarterback if they are available at the 13th overall pick.

To say it’s off the table, that would be unfair.”
Smith may still be performing at a high level, the Redskins are well aware that he is in the back half of his career that could see his production and effectiveness on the field decline. The 33-year-old has been a solid source of reliability throughout his career, but there could come a point over the next few years where the team may have to move another direction.
Washington could be in a spot to take one of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft as one of them could slip down to their selection. It would allow them to have Smith's eventual replacement with no rush to put him on the field over the next couple of years.
This may just be a ploy for the Redskins to garner more attention regarding possible trade talks to acquire more picks and talent, but the possibility is certainly there. Depending on how the draft plays out, the team could be in a prime position to either snag a young promising quarterback or garner additional assets for their high first-round selection.
