There were likely a good number of people who were surprised by how good Jimmy Garoppolo was upon arriving to the San Francisco 49ers from the New England Patriots. Jimmy G went a perfect 5-0 in the five games he started for the team last season after they had just one win through the first 11 games.

Cassius Marsh wasn’t among those who were shocked by Jimmy G’s sudden success in San Fran, though. The Niners defensive end, who was also Garoppolo’s teammate in New England last year, saw the young quarterback in action during practice. He claims Garoppolo basically looked like a more athletic Tom Brady as he was shredding the defense on a daily basis.

“I was with the Patriots and he would shred our defense every day,” Marsh said recently, via Eric Branch of SFGate.com. “He’d shred the first team every day, and it looked no different than when Tom was on the field. He’s a much better athlete than Tom. He’s super disciplined and works hard. I’m very happy to have him as my quarterback.”

While a player’s performance on the practice field doesn’t always translate seamlessly to actual games and should be taken with a grain of salt in general, Garoppolo proved with his late-season play that he was indeed as good as he seemed in training.

It’s still a bit of a mystery why the Patriots opted to move on from such a talented young QB who could’ve been a capable successor to Brady, especially after seeing him perform so well during practice. The 49ers aren’t complaining, though, as the Patriots’ loss is the Niners’ gain.
