Without a doubt, the 94th Academy Awards just broke the internet. And it did when Will Smith punched Chris Rock out of nowhere after the latter made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith, the former's wife. But as things went to commercial, Denzel Washington stepped up and did what he can to defuse the tense atmosphere surrounding the Oscars.

In a video uploaded by Scott Feinberg on Twitter, Washington was seen calming Smith down after the latter shocked the whole world by landing a solid right hook on Rock's face while the Oscars was being broadcasted live. Actor and director Tyler Perry was also seen joining Washington in consoling the Men In Black star.

Later in the night, Washington was the one tearing up after hearing Smith's speech for winning the Best Actor award for King Richard.

After a few seconds, Smith appears to be brushing tears from his eyes as the pair led him to other individuals near the stage. Smith then spoke to an unnamed celebrity who spoke and hugged him after. The actor then walked on as he seemingly wiped tears away from his eyes.

Earlier during the Oscars, Rock made a joke about Pinkett-Smith's bald hairstyle by saying he's excited for G.I. Jane 2. The said movie starred Demi Moore and had the actress play a female soldier with her head shaved off. The actress was then visibly irked at the joke, which prompted Smith to go up to the stage and punch the comedian.

After going down, Smith was yelling at Rock to keep his wife's name off his mouth. For his part, the host just said that it was a joke and transitioned to the nominees of the Best Documentary award.

It still remains to be seen what the true story behind this incident will be. What's known, though, is that Smith allowed his emotions to get the better of him as he dealt with Rock while the Oscars was live on television. Thankfully, the actor has Washington to count on during this intense moment of his career.
