Well, glad to know it wasn't racism that sparked the racist remarks made by NFHS Announcer Matt Rowan during last night's girls' basketball matchup between Norman and Midwest City high schools.
In a recent statement, the announcer behind the now-viral video footage of racist rhetoric being uttered into a hot mic at during the national anthem of last night's game apologized for his comments, citing a spike in blood sugar as the cause behind his expletive-ridden tirade. Bleacher Report's Taylor Rooks tweeted an image of the press release:
……..in the statement, Matt Rowan blames his racist comments and use of the n-word on type 1 diabetes. HE BLAMED RACISM ON HIS SUGAR SPIKE. pic.twitter.com/g8LzRjTiQX

Now, this is not to disparage the plight faced by anyone facing a chronic and debilitating illness. It is hard to imagine the pressure and stress on those that have another factor in their lives that they are forced to carry every day. But this statement will nevertheless be met with wide skepticism.
Rowan's statement is only the latest in a series of developments since the game's livestream, with officials from all levels of Oklahoma's public and educational systems rushing out to denounce the announcer's actions.
KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City's ABC provider, was able to get statements from several of these individuals, who have consistently called out Rowan's evident and blatant insensitivity:
“We condemn and will not tolerate the disgusting words and attitudes of these announcers,” Said local superintendent Nick Nigliorino. “This type of hate speech has no place in our society and we are outraged that it would be directed at any human being, and particularly at our students.”
This statement was echoed by most interviewed over the course of the report.
It remains to be seen if any official statements will be made in reaction to this recent development by Matt Rowan, but the consensus is certainly leaning towards doubt over the legitimacy of diabetically-induced racism.
Article Continues BelowWhat's worse is that up until that point in his press release, the announcer spoke well enough to seem genuine, to a degree. And that was all outdone and outshined in the worst way by what is seemingly a defense of wildly inappropriate, and blatantly racist behavior.
