The good news for the Chicago White Sox is that they have the biggest division lead of any team in MLB. They sit ahead of the Cleveland Indians by 10 games in the American League Central. The not so good news is that they are piling up a couple of injuries in their pitching rotation with the stretch run of the regular season arriving.
On Tuesday, the White Sox put Cy Young candidate Lance Lynn on the injured list with right knee inflammation. Later on that evening, star pitcher Lucas Giolito exited his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a hamstring injury.
Giolito didn't sound too concerned following the game, per ESPN.
“I pulled my hammy a little bit,” Giolito said after the 4-2 win. “It was a couple pitches after that swinging bunt play. It reminded me of the feeling in 2019 when I pulled my hamstring but it wasn't as intense, so that's why I wanted to keep going and see how I felt, but it didn't want to hold strong, so that's why I came out of the game.”
When asked how long he believed he could be out, Giolito said, “I can't see it being very long.”
The White Sox have a comfortable cushion in the AL Central and perhaps if injuries are to occur it's better to have them now at the start of September rather than leading into the postseason.
Chicago has World Series aspirations and they are legitimate but those chances largely hinge on their lead horses in the rotation which consists of Giolito and Lynn for the White Sox.
