Fernando Tatis Jr.'s recent motorcycle injury could have cause him a whole lot of money.

According to Jon Morosi on Twitter, the Padres could have voided his contract since Tatis Jr. injured himself while riding a motorcycle. Any injury related to motorcycle-use is grounds for contract termination.

Tatis Jr. signed a 14-year contract worth $340,000,000 dollars prior to the 2021 campaign. He made $1,000,000 in 2021 with a rising salary for the upcoming seasons. San Diego could have chosen to keep that money but instead decided to keep the contract intact.

Morosi reported that the Padres “value its long-term relationship with a superstar player.” They also would have needed to prove that the motorcycle incident caused the injury had they elected to pursue voiding the contract.

Tatis Jr. is expected to miss up to three months with a fractured wrist. He is coming off of a fantastic 2021 campaign that saw him hit .282 with 42 home runs and 97 RBI's. His numbers are even more impressive when you consider that he was limited to 130 games due to injury. The 23-year old superstar possesses all of the talent in the world but has struggled to stay healthy since entering the big leagues. But his previous injuries have been baseball related. This current injury could negatively affect his reputation, especially amongst the Padres fan base.

But for now he should be counting his lucky stars that San Diego decided to not void his massive contract. The Padres are hopeful he can return mid-season and help lead them to the postseason.
