Head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick, sadly suffered the tragedy of his mother passing away on Monday. According to an article by Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, he has released a statement. And that statement is already tugging at our heartstrings:

“”My dad was away a lot on scouting trips, and so I always kind of grew up with her on football weekends at home,” Bill Belichick said. We watched hundreds of games together, whether it was Navy games, or listening to them on the radio. … We became very close and shared those experiences together.”

“I just thank everyone who's reached out and expressed their sympathy and condolences for my mom — especially [Seahawks coach] Pete [Carroll] had some really great words, and [Ravens coach] John Harbaugh. Many others that I know — friends, football people — and honestly many people that I've never met or contacted before, so I do really appreciate the support there,” he said.”

Obviously, it's always tragic when someone passes away. Due to that, it is a normal human reaction to be sad – even if you did not personally know the person.

Bill Belichick does a good job of giving everyone a small idea of who his mother was though. And what makes this a little bit more heartbreaking is who exactly the coach is.

Belichick does not usually share his emotions much. So when he speaks like this, it is very easy to see his emotions. That certainly makes the situation more heartbreaking.

We do now know where he gets his love of all things football though. And it is nice to see other coaches in the NFL reaching out to send their condolences.

The Patriots face off with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 for Sunday Night Football. You would have to imagine Belichick will be there and hoping to get a win for his mother.
