When the New England Patriots drafted Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, it sent a clear message that at some point, they would hand the keys to the car over to him to run the offense. While it may not be right out of the gates in 2021, the former Alabama national champion will certainly get his shot at some point in time.

Cam Newton returns to the Patriots after starting and spending 2020 with the squad. It was a bit of a roller coaster ride that fizzled out in the end but in Newton's defense, there wasn't much to work with offensively around him. Now, he may get another shot in 2021 to run the show and New England went out and spent in free agency adding players like Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Newton is aware of the situation around him and he talked to NESN about the quarterback competition going on.

“Ever since I’ve been here, there’s been a quarterback competition,” Newton said Friday. “I think in essence, that’s the underlying Patriot Way. Every position has a competition there, and the quarterback position is no different…Brian Hoyer is supposed to make me better. I’m supposed to make Mac Jones better. Mac Jones is supposed to make Brian Hoyer better. And you can’t forget about (Jake) Dolegala and even (Jarrett Stidham), that’s in the balance…But for us, it’s just the mentality to have that championship mental toughness each and every day, and the desire to get better.”

The Patriots will look to bounce back after a deflating 2020 season that saw the Bills take control of the AFC East. Regardless of who is QB1 in New England, they will look to get back to their winning ways.
