After receiving little to no interest league-wide last off-season, Cam Newton signed a one-year, incentive-laden contract with the New England Patriots.

As ESPN's Field Yates broke down at the time, Newton's contract included $3.75 million in playing-time incentives. If he was to lead the Patriots to their sixth Super Bowl title of the century, he would earn a maximum value of $7.5 million.

Obviously, that will not happen, as the Patriots have been eliminated from playoff contention.

So much will Newton earn in 2020?

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, if Newton dresses for the Pats' final two games and plays at least 80 percent of snaps, he will receive $3.706 million in total salary for the season. (He's currently at 86.8 percent).

Florio calculated that number by adding the sum of his $1.05 base salary, a per-game roster bonus of $43,750 for 15 games, plus a $2 million playing-time incentive for playing between 80 and 90 percent of total offensive snaps.

“With New England’s average offensive snaps at 64 per game this year, another 128 of 128 over the last two games won’t be enough to get Newton north of 90 percent, which would bump the incentive to $2.25 million” Florio writes. “If Newton for some reason doesn’t play the final two games, he’d likely fall below 80 percent. That would drop the incentive to $1.75 million.”

Newton got off to a promising start to the 2020 season, leading the team to a Week 1 victory, then throwing for 397 yards in a 35-30 shootout loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

But his play has dipped since then, and he hasn't looked like the same player since testing positive for COVID-19 in early October. Overall, he's thrown five TDs against 10 interceptions, with a 44.7 QBR.

Assuming New England doesn't franchise tag Newton, he will likely hit the open market again this spring. Newton has been non-committal about a return to the Pats next season.

“I think the biggest thing is I’m just trying to maximize on the things that I know I have to prove. And that’s starting with Monday,” Newton said, via Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald. “That’s simple. I play this game for one reason, and that’s just to win. And we have an opportunity to win on Monday. Let’s just see how that goes.”
