The New England Patriots have a new face calling defensive plays. Well, sort of a new face. Former Pats linebacker Jerod Mayo has been given the responsibility of calling the plays, according to Pro Football Talk, via the WEEI Sports Network. Patriots safety Duron Harmon had some high praise for Mayo.

“Jerod, obviously, he’s been calling the plays for us,” Harmon said. “He’s been working at making sure he can get the play in on time and he’s been doing a good job for us. Obviously, there are going to be growing pains, and I wouldn’t even call them growing pains. There are just some things we’re going to need to get better at, but right now I like where we are headed.”

If the first week of preseason is any indication, Mayo is doing everything right. New England walloped the Detroit Lions on Thursday night, with the defense doing more than its fair share. The Lions were held to three points and allowed nine sacks. This was a dominant defensive performance if there ever was one. While it's true that it was just week one of the preseason, but any time there's a performance like that, it's worth looking at.

At first glance, it's easy to see that Mayo is qualified for the job. He played for eight seasons, with two Pro Bowl appearances and one selection to the first-team All-Pro. While he never played on a Super Bowl-winning team, his experience can't be questioned. Hopefully, Mayo can learn from coach Bill Belichick and contribute to the infamous Patriots.
