Patrick Peterson’s cousin, Bryant McFadden, recently claimed that the Patriots are one of three top contenders that have shown interest in a trade for the All-Pro Cardinals cornerback, who wants out of Arizona by next week. But apparently, that may not be the case, according to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston.

A source tells me the team hasn’t had a single conversation about making a deal with Arizona for the 28-year-old corner. Noodling about how the team would be able to make him fit is a “waste of time.”

As Curran lays out, even if the Patriots were interested in adding Peterson to their team, their current cap situation would make it quite difficult for them to fit in the superstar corner’s significant cap number. And that's even after they recently restructured Stephon Gilmore's contract to free up more space.

The Patriots currently have Gilmore, Jason McCourty, Eric Rowe, J.C. Jackson, and Jonathan Jones manning the cornerback spots. Obviously, Peterson would be a massive upgrade to that unit and his potential partnership with Gilmore would give the Patriots arguably the best 1-2 cornerback duo in the league. But it seems as if that is just not likely to happen.

However, the Patriots have a history of making deals right around the trade deadline, and the defense could use a bit more reinforcements. So while Peterson may not be coming to Foxboro, there’s still a decent chance that Bill Belichick will be busy trying to make a deal or two in the next week.
