The New England Patriots are set to head into the final week of preseason action and are more than ready to get the 2019 NFL regular season underway. After winning the Super Bowl last year, the Patriots made quite a few additions and had a few subtractions as well this offseason. One of their additions was veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

Once a star with the Denver Broncos, Thomas slowed down a bit over the last two years. Unfortunately, his 2018 season ended prematurely after being traded to the Houston Texans due to a torn Achilles.

Now, the veteran is looking to revitalize his career with the Patriots. Many receivers have ended up joining New England to play with Tom Brady and boost their career. Thomas is hoping to be the latest to do just that.

Last season split between the Broncos and Texans, Thomas ended up catching 59 passes for 677 yards and five touchdowns. It wasn't an awful season, but he no longer as the top-notch speed and athleticism that he once possessed.

All of that being said, why could Thomas end up being the biggest 53-man roster cut when everything is said and done?

One of the most difficult times of the NFL season is the roster cutdown date ahead of the regular season. Teams have to make tough decisions on young players and veterans and decide how they want to set up their roster for the year. Thomas may not end up making the cut for the Patriots.

New England lost superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski this offseason to retirement. There has been some buzz that he could end up returning to the team in the future, but that is simply speculation at this point in time.

Getting Brady as many weapons as possible was an immediate need for the Patriots. Thomas was available and New England decided to jump on the opportunity. He has started sprinting and appears to be on the road back to full health, but there are some factors that are completely out of his control that could control his fate.

First and foremost, the Patriots have a ton of talent at the wide receiver position. Julian Edelman is back for another season, while the team also has names like Phillip Dorsett, N'Keal Harry, Jakobi Meyers, and Cameron Meredith. The return of Josh Gordon from another suspension further makes Thomas' roster spot tougher to gain.

Secondly, Thomas is still working his way back from a serious injury. The Patriots cannot be 100 percent certain that he will return to full strength. With plenty of other players ready to go at 100 percent into the regular season, Thomas could end up being the odd man out.

Finally, the Patriots are not going to want to move on from their young talent. Meyers has been impressive so far this offseason and New England isn't likely to move on from him. Meredith is another receiver who, at 26 years old, has big-time potential if he can stay healthy.

With Brady not getting any younger, the Patriots need to keep all the long-term weapons that they can at wide receiver. Thomas simply does not fit that mold.

There is still a chance that Thomas could end up coming back at full strength and staying on the roster. Unfortunately, it seems more likely that he will end up becoming a free agent ahead of the season.

New England may take a chance on him, but Thomas may end up being the biggest name that is forced out when roster cuts come calling.
