Pelicans’ David Griffin says JJ Redick ‘is among the very best shooters and professionals in league history’
Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin released a statement on the move:
“JJ Redick is among the very best shooters and professionals in league history,” said Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin, via Pelicans.com. “Coming off perhaps the best season of his remarkable career, his on-the-court résumé speaks for itself.
“However, it was his desire to dive into the role of mentor and veteran leader that spoke most directly to us and has us most excited about our future together. We are thrilled to be able to welcome JJ and his family to New Orleans and our community.”
Redick spent the past two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. The sharpshooter averaged 18.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists this past season with the Sixers while shooting 44.0 percent from the field, 39.7 percent from beyond the arc and 89.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Surrounding rookie Zion Williamson with shooters is important so the Pelicans star has driving lanes to attack the basket. Redick is a career 41.3 percent shooter from the 3-point line.
When Williamson, as well as guards Jrue Holiday and Lonzo Ball, are driving toward the basket on Redick’s side of the floor, defenders won’t be able to leave Redick since he’s an elite shooter. That will allow Zion, Jrue and Lonzo to get to the basket with ease.
