Julius Randle wasn’t a happy camper following the New Orleans Pelicans’ 122-110 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on night.

The 24-year-old power forward put forth a career-high 45-point showing, but noted after the loss that his missed free throws down the stretch marred his big night.

“Absolutely. Absolutely. You can count on that,” Randle told reporters. “Obviously it was my career high, but if I make some more free throws, I would have given my team a better chance to win. That's more what I'm upset about.”

Randle struggled throughout the game, going 3-of-11 from the line.

New Orleans officially won’t finish above .500 this season, currently hoisting a stony 30-41 record.

The Pelicans were without their two best players in Anthony Davis (rest) and Jrue Holiday (lower-abdominal strain).

Head coach Alvin Gentry has been overburdened trying to capture victories against teams that are at full capacity with his squad’s recent injuries, and the absences of Davis and Holiday granted the Western Conference-contending Trail Blazers a simpler task.

“It’s hard to win a game when you’re missing two guys that’s averaging almost 50 points,” Gentry told Andrew Lopez of The Times Picayune. “I mean, let’s just be real about it. But I love the way the guys are playing.”

In Holiday’s absence, Elfrid Payton extended his triple-double streak to three games with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and a career-high 16 dimes — becoming the first player in team history to accomplish that feat.

Payton, who is averaging 10.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7.1 assists, also expressed his grief on the team’s recent losing streak.

“I think it’s kind of special,” Payton said. “It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t win honestly…We didn’t win any of those games.”

Julius Randle is having the best season of his five-year career — averaging 21.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists for the New Orleans Pelicans.
