In only 11 games played, first overall pick Zion Williamson is proving doubters wrong. The New Orleans Pelicans rookie is only logging around 27 minutes a game, and yet recently made history as the youngest player in the NBA to score 20+ points in seven straight games.

The record was previously held by Carmelo Anthony in 2004.

The Pelicans have been cautious with their lottery pick player’s health, opting to restrict his minutes for good measure. Despite this, Zion presently has 22.1 point and 7.5 rebounds per game. These numbers have propelled him back to the Rookie of the Year talks, despite missing weeks’ worth of games due to injury. Grizzlies’ second overall pick Ja Morant has been the leading contender, but many are still waiting for their team’s corresponding regular season records.

The two teams still make a determined case for the last playoff spot. Morant and the now 28-27 Grizzlies have a heavy task to undertake, as they are slated to have the hardest remaining schedule. On the other hand, the 24-32 Pelicans have a chance to propel from the eleventh seed with the easiest remaining schedule.

True to this, Friday night saw Memphis losing against the Lakers, while New Orleans grabbed an important win against another fellow West playoffs contender, the Portland Trailblazers. The Pelicans led by as many as 22, and have now won four of their last five games. Zion continued to be an accelerant for the Pelicans, racking up 25 points.

Fans will surely continue to stay tuned to the playoff race. New Orleans will visit the 12-44 Golden State on Sunday, while Memphis will have to hold off another strong championship contender in the Clippers. If the Pelicans continue to rack up more wins and eventually steal the last playoff spot from Memphis, it wouldn’t be surprise if Williamson becomes Rookie of the Year.
