Like many other members of the NBA community, Detroit Pistons forward Blake Griffin was saddened to learn of the passing of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.
During a break in Monday's shootaround with the Pistons, Griffin spoke to members of the media about the impact Kobe had on his life.
“He had his hand in so many different things,” Griffin said of Bryant. “Obviously, I looked up to him as a basketball player. But just as a human, watching him transition. The way he exited the game with so much grace was inspirational.
“If you inspire one person, you've lived a positive, successful life,” Griffin added. “(Kobe) inspired millions.”
Bryant was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning at the age of 41. The five-time champion was on his way to the Mamba Sports Academy, where he was to serve as a coach for young campers. Sadly, all nine passengers, including Bryant's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, perished in the accident.
The incident has shaken the NBA family to its core, as it's a stark reminder that nothing is guaranteed. The Pistons' forward is one of many who have shared very emotional reactions.
Bryant will be remembered as one of the greatest players to have ever laced up a pair of basketball shoes. From Lower Merion High School, Kobe went on to earn five NBA championships with the Lakers, 18 All-Star nods, and two Finals MVP Awards.
