Reputable transfer insider Fabrizio Romano claims Paris Saint-Germain was prioritizing a move for Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and not Lionel Messi.

The past transfer window blew away soccer fans around the globe as Lionel Messi shockingly left his beloved Barcelona for PSG.

On the surface, it appeared as if PSG had been keeping tabs on Messi’s situation for quite some time before finally making a swoop for the Argentine last month.

However, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the truth was that PSG only viewed Messi as an “opportunity” and had been tailing Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson instead.

“For Jordan Henderson, I want to say, behind the scenes PSG were thinking of Jordan Henderson as a potential new signing before the Leo Messi opportunity, because Leo Messi was an opportunity, it was not something planned,” Romano recently said on The Here We Go Podcast.

Romano went on to reveal that prior to landing Messi, PSG was searching for a formidable midfielder and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba was shortlisted as a top target.

However, the journalist bared that a transfer move for Pogba was “more than complicated” as Manchester United has not been keen on letting the Frenchman go.

“Before signing Messi, they [PSG] were looking for a midfielder,” he divulged. “[Paul] Pogba was more than complicated because Man United wanted to keep him, and Paris Saint-Germain were looking for Jordan Henderson when he had no agreement with Liverpool over a new contract.”

It can be recalled that in the end, Barcelona parted ways with Messi, who immediately joined PSG via free transfer.
