Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal is gearing up for a run in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nadal is coming off a first-round Grand Slam elimination at the French Open. However, fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz advanced and won the Roland Garros with a thrilling comeback against Alexander Zverev. It turns out Alcaraz and Nadal will get a dream partnership ahead of the Summer Games.

Nadal and Alcaraz will be doubles partners for Paris 2024, the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation announced Wednesday. Nadal has been limited by injuries for the past two years. Yet, he is focusing his preparation on the Olympics.

“My main goal now is to play Olympics,” Nadal said after his first-round French Open loss on May 27, per ESPN. “That's going to be here. So I need to prepare myself the proper way to try to arrive here healthy and well prepared, and then let's see.”

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will play both singles and doubles in the Summer Games. The marquee tennis competition will be held at Roland Garros, the same site where Nadal is a 14-time champion and Alcaraz won the 2024 French Open.

Spanish national team coach David Ferrer revealed that the Nadal-Alcaraz pairing was highly anticipated.

“One pair, which I think everyone knows and was hoping for, is Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal and the second pair is yet to be decided. It hasn't been 100% confirmed yet,” Ferrer told reporters.

Alcaraz is making his Olympic debut and winning gold is his ultimate goal.

“The Olympic Games are every four years and it's a special tournament where you're not only playing for yourself, but for a country, representing every Spaniard,” the No. 2-ranked Alcaraz said. “I think this year I'd choose Olympic gold.”

Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz prepare for intense run

Alcaraz grew up watching Nadal win countless trophies at Roland Garros. The young tennis phenom still has a ways to go to catch Nadal, but he solidified his own path in the record books.

At just 21 years old, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest man to win a major final on all three surfaces. Alcaraz's major wins include the 2022 US Open, the 2023 Wimbledon, and now, the 2024 French Open. His historical feat came after he rallied to beat Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Alcaraz's accomplishment is awe-inspiring, and if he continues to be consistent, only great things lie in wait for him. Alcaraz's three major wins come at an age just one and half years earlier than Nadal when he accomplished the feat, per insight from ESPN.

Alcaraz was humble during his post-game speech by first giving credit to his parents.

“Now,” Alcaraz told his parents at Court Philippe Chatrier on Sunday, “I am lifting this trophy in front of you.”

Alcaraz also praised Alexander Zverev for his inspiring journey to the final. Likewise, Zverev paid him respect.

“You're already a Hall of Famer and you already achieved so much,” Zverev told Alcaraz after the match. “Not the last time you're going to win this.”

Alcaraz looks to make more tennis history at the Paris 2024 Olympics alongside fellow veteran Spanish native Rafael Nadal.
