The Toronto Raptors have signed head coach Nick Nurse to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday morning. The details of the extension haven't yet been revealed.

Raptors president Masai Ujiri made a statement on the signing:

“Our confidence in Nick just continues to grow, and part of that comes from what we’ve experienced together. The past two seasons have been unlike any other in our team’s history – first, winning our championship, and then navigating a global pandemic and committing long-term to the fight against racism and for social justice,” Raptors president Masai Ujiri said. “Nick has proved that he can coach on the court and lead in life, and we’re looking forward to accomplishing great things in the future.”

The defending champion Raptors were just eliminated by the Boston Celtics in seven games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. While Toronto fell short of repeating, Nurse coached the club to a 53-19 record after losing Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. Nurse won Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Nurse was promoted to head coach in 2018 after Toronto decided to move on from Dwane Casey. Thanks to Nurse's brilliant coaching, the Leonard trade and other savvy moves, the Raptors won 58 games and their first-ever championship last season. Toronto beat the Golden State Warriors in six games in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Nurse has become known for his innovative coaching tactics, and the franchise clearly thinks the 53-year-old is the right man for the job to lead the Raptors into the future. Toronto may be looking at some big changes this offseason, but no matter what happens with the roster, Nurse can be counted on to coach the team up.

The head coach is appreciative of the Raptors:

“My family and I will always be appreciative of Larry Tanenbaum and MLSE ownership for this opportunity. I’m grateful to Masai, Bobby, and the players for their trust and their hard work,” Nurse said. “Toronto has been my home for the past seven years, and I look forward to it being home for many more. I’ve watched this franchise grow and reach the pinnacle, and I look forward to the challenge of helping us win another championship.”

This is a well-deserved extension for Nick Nurse.
