Thibaut Courtois put on a world-class performance on Saturday in the Champions League Final against Liverpool, denying the Reds multiple goalscoring opportunities and helping Real Madrid win its 14th UCL trophy in club history. After the win, an emotional Courtois explained what his rise back to stardom meant to him after a less than pristine exit from life in the Premier League at Chelsea, via Fabrizio Romano.

“Back in England, I don't get enough respect… so, well, I showed it today. I wanted ot put some respect on my name there.”

That's one way to make sure fans in England recognize your greatness. Courtois was impenetrable for Real Madrid, denying Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and the rest of the Liverpool squad on multiple occasions. His contributions were as good as scoring multiple goals on the opposite end, keeping Real Madrid on top of a 1-0 victory.

Since joining Real Madrid, Courtois has reasserted himself as one of the world's best goalkeepers. After dominating at the start of his Chelsea tenure, he found himself out of favor among the fans after a few seasons, and eventually left unceremoniously for Real Madrid, despite winning two Premier League titles with Chelsea.

He can now add a Champions League trophy to his resume, and he'll likely be credited as Man of the Match for what was undisputedly the game of his career. Getting matched up with an English team in the Final was just the added motivation Courtois needed as he proved to any doubter that he's clearly in the upper echelon of goalkeepers.
