The Boston Red Sox are in an interesting position as the MLB trade deadline approaches, they are two games out of a playoff spot, and many question whether general manager Chaim Bloom will bring in some help. Red Sox manager Alex Cora made it clear that he wants Chaim Bloom to add pieces that can help the team contend, rather than build up the farm system.

“It's not about how many prospects you have or where your farm system is,” Cora said, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “The one that really counts is how many games you win in October and how many games you play in October.”

The Red Sox could use some help from a starting pitching standpoint. The team has lost Chris Sale, Tanner Houck, Corey Kluber and Garrett Whitlock to injuries at points throughout the year.

Team defense could improve as well, but the main target for the Red Sox is likely adding pitching, if they are going to be buyers at the trade deadline.

The Red Sox entered Sunday tied for last place in the American League East, and two games out of a wild card spot in the American League. The race for a wild card spot is so tight that they could very well make it with some smart additions at the trade deadline. It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox play well enough over the next week to justify adding to the team, and where Bloom will go with the approach to the deadine.
