Following a huge loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football, Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden wanted no part of the idea that his guys were flat and that's why his team lost.
“I don’t say it was flat,” Jay Gruden told reporters regarding the team’s performance during a fairly brief media appearance following the 38-14 loss. “I say we just dropped the ball. We had two fumbles and a dropped pass that resulted in an interception. So I don’t think we came out flat. We just didn’t protect the football. . . . I think the effort’s fine. We just got beat today. . . . Credit them for making the plays. We just didn’t make any.”
Questioning effort is always a go-to for those who want to explain things away in the most simple way as possible. There's no real way — save for obvious examples seen with eyeballs — to backup those sort of claims. Not to mention that it is a dangerous thing to accuse someone of, as you're implying players do not actually care about winning games.
Receiver Jamison Crowder, who has been dreadful at the receiver position in spots, did add some levity after the game. Also the team's punt returner, he appears not too worried about losing his job.
“We don’t have anybody to put back there right now,” Crowder said. “We just don’t. . . . I don’t have anybody else to return a punt.”
Nevertheless, the Redskins have been ravaged by injuries. If you're looking for a reason for a bit of a dip in play, that's probably it.
