Tight end Vernon Davis is uncertain to play in Week 5 while in concussion protocol, according to Ben Standig of The Athletic — as if the Washington Redskins weren't dealing with enough injuries.

Washington's starting tight end, Jordan Reed, remains out; he too is in concussion protocol for a helmet-to-helmet hit suffered in preseason Week 3. With Reed out, Davis took reins of the starting job.

Through the first four weeks of the season, Davis tallied 10 receptions (19 targets) for 123 yards and one touchdown, the first of Washington's season.

Davis entered the concussion protocol following Washington's 24-3 loss to the New York Giants. It's unclear when he sustained the injury. Davis received the team's final target on Sunday, a Dwayne Haskins interception where the ball bounced off his hands and into Jonoris Jenkins' mitts.

If Davis and Reed are out, Washington will be mighty thin at tight end. Jeremy Sprinkle would get the start — who dropped 22.2% of his targets in the first three weeks, per Pro Football Reference. Washington signed Jerome Cunningham, a career journeyman, last week to be the third tight end.

Washington could promote Drew Belcher from the practice squad if the two are out for Week 5. The Redskins have a roster spot available following the release of wide receiver Robert Davis.

Nonetheless, Washington is entering a Week 5 game against the New England Patriots (in Landover, Maryland) battered and winless. With the Redskins missing their top two tight ends, the game could get ugly no matter if Case Keenum or Dwayne Haskins starts.
