It seems the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes isn’t quite done and dusted after all. Despite recent reports circulating that the in-demand quarterback had already narrowed down his destination in free agency to two teams (and possibly even one), a conflicting report has now emerged saying that Cousins is still keeping all his options open.

Per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News:

I'm hearing that free agent Kirk Cousins has not ruled out any teams (despite the chatter). He's keeping all options open. There's still ample time to survey the landscape and find a new home. So, the Jets are still very much a viable destination.

With a bit of time still to go until free agency officially begins, it was a little surprising to see the report that Cousins had already decided where he was going to go. Apparently, that might not be the case.

However, this recent leak of Cousins supposedly having his destination of choice already determined likely isn’t an accident. Perhaps Cousins’ camp saw this as a move that could raise offers from the other contending teams which they might not have found acceptable.

While the Jets can – and possibly will – offer Cousins a bigger contract than what anyone else can give, they likely won’t be contending for the Super Bowl anytime soon unlike the Vikings, Broncos, or Cardinals if they had Cousins as their quarterback.

Cousins wants to win, but it's possible the gap in offers is wide enough that he must seriously consider the Jets in order to get the contract he feels he's worth.

It remains to be seen whether this wake-up call of sorts can get Cousins some improved contract offers from other teams. But with just over a week until the start of free agency, the wait to find out if that is indeed the case – and what he ultimately decides to do – won’t be too long now.
