Legendary NCAA men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino's Iona Gaels earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament after winning the MAAC championship. Unfortunately, Pitino's son, Richard Pitino, is getting the boot from Minnesota, according to Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Richard Pitino's firing follows right in the wake of Archie Miller's dismissal from Indiana.

The Golden Gophers had mixed success in Pitino's eight-year tenure.

Richard Pitino took over for Tubby Smith ahead of the 2013-14 season. He amassed a 141-123 record and was even named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2016-17. But Pitino only managed a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances with the Golden Gophers and just one March Madness win. Minnesota also struggled in conference play during Pitino's time on the bench.

The Golden Gophers actually got off to a tremendous start this past season. Minnesota raced out to a 10-2 mark, with wins over the likes of Iowa, Michigan State and Ohio State. After losing two straight following the win over the Buckeyes, the Golden Gophers earned another marquee victory over the Michigan Wolverines. But things went downhill in a hurry for Richard Pitino and Co.

Minnesota won just two games after the aforementioned win over the Wolverines. The Golden Gophers won their opening round game against the Northwestern Wildcats at the start of the Big Ten Tournament, but they came up short against the Buckeyes.

Whereas the elder Pitino will go dancing, Richard Pitino will be on the hunt for a new job following a second straight sub-.500 season.
