Rockets tie franchise-record for most wins after overtime victory

The Houston Rockets continued to their stretch of dominance with a clutch win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday. The victory not only helped solidify their spot atop the NBA, but it also marked another impressive feat for the Rockets’ franchise.

Houston has been far and away the best team in the 2017-18 NBA season. However, according to Justin Kubatko of statmuse.com, they are on the verge of becoming perhaps the best in franchise history after tying their team record for most wins in a season:

The Houston Rockets picked up their 58th win of the season last night, tying the team record for most wins in a season held by the 1993-94 squad.

There had been plenty of speculation regarding Houston’s offseason acquisition of point guard Chris Paul. Critics felt that having two ball-dominant guards in one backcourt could never work. Needless to say, the Rockets have now exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations.

However, they are now getting ready to capitalize on their home-court advantage in the formidable Western Conference playoffs. The Rockets are hoping they can achieve the same result as the last team to win 58 games in a season. The 1993-94 Houston squad was led by NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon, which went on to win the championship over the New York Knicks. It also sparked a second consecutive trip to the Finals where they swept the Orlando Magic the following year.

That said, the expectations could not be any higher for the Rockets going into the postseason. Fortunately, they have seemingly embraced the notion of becoming favorites to win it all this year.
