Sean Payton could not be happier for former New Orleans Saints backup Teddy Bridgewater as he begins the next chapter of his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers.

The Saints head coach lauded Bridgewater for his easy-going nature and “humility” during his time with New Orleans during an appearance on ESPN's “Get Up!” Payton also jokingly wished Bridgewater joined a team in a different division (via John Sigler of USA TODAY):

“I’m thrilled for him,” Payton began. “We’ve communicated a little bit, man what a great story. And another great person. Just having a chance to be around him, we’ve had one of the better quarterback rooms that you could ever envision with Drew, Teddy, and with Taysom. Those guys were outstanding together, they all had a good sense of humor. And they could all laugh at themselves.

“I think that’s an important trait in any industry. That humility, if you will, to make fun of yourself and still stay confident. And Teddy’s gonna have that opportunity in Carolina. I’m thrilled for him, and again it’s that double-edged sword where you’re excited for him. You just wish it was in another division.”

Bridgewater–a former Pro Bowler turned perennial backup–was rushed into starting duty when Drew Brees suffered a thumb injury in Week 2, but he went undefeated in his next five starts, keeping the Saints at the top of the NFC and serving notice to executives in his walk year.

The 27-year-old will be the projected starter in Carolina after signing a three-year, $63 million deal with the Panthers in free agency.

Payton might not be as thrilled if Bridgewater torches the Saints in division play, though he certainly respects Bridgewater's journey.
