There were some speculations that the Philadelphia 76ers might embrace going small when they announced the hiring of Daryl Morey as president of basketball operations. Questions were raised if Morey will soon trade away the Sixers' 7-foot All-Star Joel Embiid.
However, judging by the former Houston Rockets executive's latest comments about the Cameroonian center, it looks like he intends to continue “The Process” with Embiid in the middle.
Morey was all praises for 26-year-old and proclaimed he could be one of the best at his position when it's all said and done.
“Joel is similar to a lot of dominant big men of the past and I think he frankly has the talent level to be in the list of some of the best of all time,” the new Sixers exec said, per John Clark of NBC Philadelphia.
Daryl Morey, of course, is the brain behind the Rockets' decision to play without a true center for most of the 2019-20 campaign. Embiid, however, possesses a wide range of skills that few bigs of today have. The newly-minted Sixers president certainly loves that Jojo nailed 33.1 percent of his triples last year, along with impressive tallies of 23.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3,0 assists and 1.3 blocks.
Moreover, Morey also assured that he won't be breaking up the team's All-Star duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.
“Now that we have Joel and Ben, foundational pieces, I would expect less trades here,” he added.
The Sixers do need a bit of restructuring with their other pieces to become legitimate contenders in the much-improved Eastern Conference next season. Apart from their two All-Stars, they also have the likes of Tobias Harris, Al Horford, and Josh Richardson in the starting lineup.
With Morey now in charge and new coach Doc Rivers set to lead, Embiid and the Sixers might finally complete the process once and for all.
