Philadelphia 76ers All-Star center Joel Embiid firmly believes defense wins championships, and that is why he wants the Sixers to be the best in that department in the 2019-20 season.

Embiid said that he and the Sixers are “aiming to be the top defense” in the NBA, and he is confident they have the necessary pieces to achieve that goal.

“We are so big and we are aiming to be the top defense in the league. And we got the right guys to accomplish that,” Embiid said, per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Sixers have one of the biggest lineups in the NBA, with newly acquired Josh Richardson being their smallest starter at 6-foot-6. They also have the frontcourt duo of Al Horford and Embiid protecting the rim, the 6-foot-9 Tobias Harris manning the wing and the 6-1o Ben Simmons running the point.

Philly ranked 15th in 2018-19 when it comes to their defensive rating (110.97), so they undoubtedly have a lot of work to do to crack the top 10 this 2019-20 campaign. They will look to improve from their second-round playoffs exit last year, and defense will be the key for them.

For what it's worth, the Toronto Raptors — who took down the Golden State Warriors for the 2019 NBA title — had the sixth-best defensive rating in the league last year.
