Toronto Raptors fans and broadcasters were on the receiving end of major backlash for cheering and celebrating Joel Embiid's injury during Game 6 of their playoff series with the Philadelphia 76ers.
To recall, Embiid got elbowed in the face by Pascal Siakam late in the contest. While the injury wasn't apparent at that time and the Sixers center was only seemingly hurt a bit, the home crowd cheered while the broadcasters can be heard saying he “deserved” it and it's “karma” for his airplane celebration from earlier.
Jack Armstrong, the Raptors broadcaster who made the comments about Embiid's injury while on-air, has since taken to Twitter to apologize for his rather insensitive message. He also showed his regret before wishing the best for Embiid in his recovery.
“I’d like to apologize for my comments late in Game 6 between the Sixers and Raptors regarding Joel Embiid. I regret my in the moment reaction. Embiid is a terrific player who has had an MVP season and I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and return to play soon!” Armstrong wrote.
Joel Embiid suffered a right orbital fracture and mild concussion as a result of the elbow, which is why a lot of people were angry to the Raptors fans who celebrated the hit like it was nothing.
The Sixers big man is out indefinitely as he recovers from the head injury, though there is hope he can return by Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Finals series against the Miami Heat. The Sixers already lost Game 1 on Monday with the Cameroonian center out.
