Liverpool’s bid at a second UEFA Champions League title in four years came to an end on Saturday, as Real Madrid had the last laugh via a 1-0 win in this year’s final.
As was the case for much of this season, Liverpool continually created stout goal-scoring chances and controlled the pace of play while in Real Madrid’s defensive third. Still, all of this amounted to nothing as the Reds failed to score in a final for the third time this season.
Speaking to BT Sport after the result, Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson took some time to reflect on just where it went wrong for his side this time around against Real Madrid. For one, Liverpool simply struggled to take advantage of the crucial goal-scoring chances that it mustered up.

Second half, we didn't start great, they start to get a better hold of the game a bit more. When you come up against an experienced team like that, they know how to win finals.
“We are a pressing team. It has worked so much for us this season and we were trying to win the ball high up and they ended up breaking down and we were caught back post and that's football. It is hard to get back in the game playing against a very experienced team, they know how to see out a game.”
Real Madrid broke out of Liverpool’s high-octane pressing system on several occasions in the contest, although it tallied for just four total shots in the match. Still, Real Madrid was able to capitalize on one of its goal-scoring chances thanks to a second half score from forward Vinicius Junior, which turned out to be all that the side needed in the fixture.
The offseason has now come for Liverpool, as a crucial summer transfer window awaits it in mere weeks.
