The 2022 UEFA Champions League Final is set to pit European powerhouses Liverpool and Real Madrid. For Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, he has been waiting quite a bit for a rematch against the reigning La Liga winners.
Liverpool fell short in its Champions League final clash with Real Madrid four years ago, as goalkeeper miscues coupled with injuries saw the Reds come away with a two-goal loss. At the least, Liverpool did find redemption a year later, defeating Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League Final.
From Klopp’s perspective, as he noted during a pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League fixture against Tottenham, he views Real Madrid as the favorites in the final, but this is a showdown that he has wanted for quite some time.
“When we lost that final, my favorite solution would have been let’s play final again next year and it’s against Real Madrid … but we played Tottenham in Madrid, so Madrid seems to be our destiny,” Klopp said.
“They are now the massive favorites. All the experience they have. We are more experienced than we were, probably, but it's not for us to compare. … We were not happy that night [in the 2018 final] that’s clear but I'm happy to go there and give it a try. But until then, we have a lot of games to play. You ask a lot of questions about Real Madrid, but until then we can stop [talking about the Champions League final.]”
As Klopp touched on, Liverpool still has four matches remaining in its Premier League schedule, as it sits at a mere one point behind current league leaders Manchester City in the standings. More so, it will also face off with Chelsea in next week's 2022 FA Cup Final.
In the big picture, Liverpool has a notable chance to finish the campaign as a quadruple-winner, which would then see it become the first Premier League team ever to accomplish this feat. For now, it has to take care of business against a Tottenham side that is aiming to cap off the season in the top four of the final league standings.
