The NFL and fining players for wearing watches, name a better duo.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the NFL has fined Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger $5,000 for wearing an Apple Watch on the sideline when Pittsburgh hosted the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night.

Per Schefter, Roethlisberger is said to be “livid” about the fine and is appealing it. However, he may not win his appeal, as the NFL bands all electronic devices that transmit information on the sidelines.

Roethlisberger's issue is that he never received “any advanced warning” that wearing an Apple Watch could be a violation. All he got was a fine letter for an accessory “he didn't even realize he had on,” per Schefter.

Being that Roethlisberger recently underwent season-ending elbow surgery, his wife dressed him for the game and strapped the watch on his left wrist. He then proceeded to walk out of the tunnel of Heinz Field, only to observe his predecessor, Mason Rudolph, from the sideline.

Roethlisberger suffered the elbow injury in a Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Steelers quarterback was seen shaking his arm at various points and eventually left the game to go to the locker room. A day later, Roethlisberger was deemed out for the rest of the season as he underwent the season-ending surgery.

Roethlisberger is on the Steelers injured reserve. Though 37 years old, the Steelers great plans to play in 2020 as well as in 2021, which he is contractually obligated to do. Until he steps back on the field — without an Apple Watch — Rudolph will be the Steelers' starter.
