The second preseason game is when position battles become far more heated, especially with a quarterback battle underway. And that's what the Pittsburgh Steelers have with the backup position up for grabs between Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs.

Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has indicated that the Rudolph will be starting in the second preseason game of the season. He'll get a chance to prove his value and place on the team with the squad he will come in with against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dobbs was given the start for the preseason opener last week over the Oklahoma State product. But Rudolph had better statistics. Dobbs completed five out of his eight passes for 85 yards and rushing twice for 44 yards. Rudolph came away with two touchdown passes with the same amount of completions and attempts and 91 passing yards.

Rudolph looks to be the better passer and is flashing significant improvement from where he was a year ago in his rookie season. Head coach Mike Tomlin went into detail that this is why they drafted him a year ago.

I think one of the things that really attracted us to [Rudolph] out of Stillwater [Oklahoma State] was that level of aggression, the way that he attacked defenses vertically and threw the ball. I know that that’s his style, that’s his demeanor — and it’s showing more and more consistently.

Now if he can continue this play for the rest of the preseason to prove his place on the quarterback depth chart, then the Steelers might find their successor to Ben Roethlisberger.
