The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed their third-round pick, former Toledo Rockets wide receiver Diontae Johnson to his rookie contract.

Johnson was drafted with the third round pick that came from the Oakland Raiders in the trade that sent Antonio Brown to the west coast. Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake knew after spending dinner with him that he was a guy he wanted on his squad.

“I basically fell in love with him after spending time dining with him and talking with him and seeing his passion for the game, for wanting to be great and his passion for his teammates,” said Drake via the Steelers team website. “Just a tremendously gifted young man. The most natural catcher I have seen in a while.”

“He was a guy I wanted. As you get to be around him you are going to love his smile, his personality and his style of play. Very excited about the pick. He is a guy Steelers Nation is going to get very, very excited about.”

Drake has been around the game of football for over 40 years and he said that this is one of the best interviews he has ever had.

“His personality, his desire, his want to, I have been doing this for 40 years and he was one of the best interviews and guys I have been around in a long time.”

Johnson's best season at Toledo was as a sophomore where he caught 74 passes for 1,278 yards and 13 touchdowns. With the Steelers losing Brown, Johnson is going to have a lot of pressure on him, but he has all the talent to be a guy that can help replace some of that production.
